Ultimamente, si è iniziato a vedere sempre di più l'anguria, utilizzata come simbolo associato a Gaza.

Il motivo risiede nei colori.
Rosso, nero, bianco, verde.
Sono i colori dell'anguria, ma anche della bandiera simbolo del popolo palestinese.

"Sascha Crasnow, una ricercatrice che si occupa di arte palestinese e islamica all’università del Michigan, ha detto al New York Times che le origini del simbolo dell’anguria non sono chiarissime.

La sua storia inizia molto probabilmente con la soppressione della bandiera palestinese da parte di Israele tra il 1967 e il 1993 (quando furono ratificati gli accordi di Oslo).

La bandiera palestinese non fu esplicitamente vietata da Israele, ma fu di fatto fatta sparire a forza dai territori occupati: fu in quegli anni, secondo Crasnow, che si cominciarono a usare immagini di angurie al posto delle bandiere.

Anche più di recente e prima di ottobre, comunque, non era inusuale che l’esercito israeliano confiscasse bandiere palestinesi nei territori occupati.

Secondo un’altra ricostruzione, tutto cominciò dalla reazione di alcuni artisti palestinesi a cui, negli anni Ottanta, l’esercito israeliano vietò di usare i colori della bandiera nelle loro opere.

Uno degli artisti, Sliman Mansour, ha detto in un’intervista che si sentì dire che gli avrebbero confiscato le opere se avesse usato quei colori, fosse anche per disegnare un’anguria."

Lately, we have started to see more and more watermelon, used as a symbol associated with Gaza.

The reason lies in the colors. Red, black, white, green. They are the colors of the watermelon, but also of the flag symbol of the Palestinian people.

"Sascha Crasnow, a researcher on Palestinian and Islamic art at the University of Michigan, told the New York Times that the origins of the watermelon symbol are not entirely clear.

Its history most likely begins with Israel’s suppression of the Palestinian flag between 1967 and 1993 (when the Oslo Accords were ratified).

The Palestinian flag was not explicitly banned by Israel, but was effectively forcibly removed from the occupied territories: it was in those years, according to Crasnow, that images of watermelons began to be used in place of flags.

Even more recently and before October, however, it was not unusual for the Israeli army to confiscate Palestinian flags in the occupied territories.

According to another reconstruction, it all began with the reaction of some Palestinian artists who, in the 1980s, were banned by the Israeli army from using the colors of the flag in their works.

One of the artist, Sliman Mansour, said in an interview that he was told that his works would be confiscated if he used those colors, even to draw a watermelon."
